In regards to gifting, what do people really want?
So What Do People Really Want?
I spend my days solving one oddly universal problem: "Michelle, what do I get them? They have everything." And, "What would you recommend? "
I can't say I write on Reddit but it is a great research tool, I was pretty impressed with what I found and also, I am combining what I hear and from those who reach out to me for guidance.
I'm the founder of Nifty Package Co, a luxury gifting studio, and FeteTango, a marketplace that connects creatives with hosts who desperately need them. I live inside people's gift dilemmas. When I'm not wrapping, I'm lurking on Reddit — my favorite unfiltered focus group — to see what real humans say they actually want.
And let me tell you: the internet and people are tired of junk gifts. To many logo mugs, towels...whatever you might want to logo.
What People Are Really Asking Online
On Reddit, the same questions loop endlessly:
- "They have everything. What do I buy?"
- "What's a practical gift that's not boring?"
- "What do older people actually want?"
- "What's your go-to gift when you have no idea what to get?"
- "What are the basic, mainstream gifts people genuinely ask for?"
These aren't questions about more stuff. They're questions about meaning, usefulness, and not throwing money away.
The Answers: What Keeps Coming Up
After scrolling way too many threads, the patterns are unmistakable.
Practical, but upgraded
People love gifts they'll use all the time — just nicer than what they'd buy for themselves.
Think: a better version of what's already in their kitchen or office. Tools that solve an everyday annoyance. Comfort upgrades like pillows, blankets, mugs, organizers, bags.
Reddit isn't shouting "luxury." It's whispering "make my daily life feel better."
Consumables, not clutter
Over and over, people beg for the same things:
Food baskets and hampers. Coffee and tea. Wine, sauces, snacks, honey, jams. Candles, bath products, lip balms, face creams.
Why? Because you enjoy them, and then they're gone. No guilt. No dust collecting on a shelf. Just a memory of someone thinking of you.
Experiences and services
For the "has everything" crowd, Reddit's answer is almost always the same: concerts, classes, dinners, tours, spa days. Car detailing. House cleaning. Memberships.
People don't want another object. They want a story.
Fewer things, better things
There's an entire Reddit culture around "buy it once, buy it right" — Anker chargers, Instant Pots, Kindle Paperwhites, KitchenAid mixers, Darn Tough socks, Leatherman multitools, Lodge cast iron, Patagonia fleece.
The pattern is consistent: quality over quantity. Durability over trend. Things that earn their place.
Gift cards (with intention)
People are more honest about this online than anywhere else. Gift cards work — when they're specific and paired with something small and thoughtful.
A café gift card tucked into a beautiful mug. An Audible credit with cozy socks. It feels like permission, not laziness.
What Different People Actually Want
Reddit also makes it crystal clear that not all recipients are created equal.
Older adults want comfort, time with family, and practical upgrades they won't splurge on themselves. A nicer robe. Premium coffee. An experience with grandkids.
The "has everything" person wants high-end consumables, experiences, and genuinely useful tools. Not more room décor or another gadget.
Coworkers and acquaintances want safe but a step above ordinary — candles, coffee, spa items, snacks, beautiful journals. Nothing too personal. Nothing that raises eyebrows.
Nobody is out here saying, "I'm dying for another random knick-knack."
So What Do People Really Want?
Strip away the noise, and the answer is simple.
People want gifts that feel like:
- You noticed how they actually live
- You respected their space and time
- You gave them something to use, savor, or remember — not just store
Useful. Consumable. Comfortable. High-quality. Experience-driven.
That's the list.
How I Build Gifts Around This (Nifty Style)
This is exactly how we design every gift at Nifty Package Co.
Everyday Luxe, Not Stuff
Instead of random filler, Nifty builds "everyday luxe" bundles:
Morning coffee rituals with beautiful mugs, premium beans, and treats. Desk-day survival kits that actually get used. Cozy-night-in bundles with textiles, snacks, and spa-level care products.
It's the nicer version of what they already do every day.
Gifts That Disappear (in the Best Way)
I lean heavily on consumables: artisan foods, small-batch treats, premium pantry items, candles, bath and body products.
My rule: as little "forever clutter" as possible. Maximum enjoyment, minimum storage guilt.
Hybrid Gifts: Thing Plus Experience
One of my favorite approaches is pairing a beautiful physical gift with an experience. Pasta-night basket plus a cooking class. Spa basket plus a massage gift card. Coffee ritual box plus a local café gift card.
Open the gift now. Enjoy the experience later. Win on both counts.
People send us items all the time and we build around that for them, which we can do for you too.
Corporate Gifts Without the Eye-Roll
For corporate clients, I design gifts that are neutral enough for HR, luxurious enough that people remember who sent them, and thoughtful enough to avoid the "oh... another logo tumbler" reaction.
When you send something people actually use up, they remember you every time they reach for it — and you're not stuck in their drawer forever.
How This Helps You Choose Better Gifts
Whether you're shopping for clients, employees, family, or friends, ask yourself:
- Will they use this in real life?
- Will this make some small part of their day easier, nicer, or more beautiful?
- Will this be gone in a few weeks — in a good way?
- Does it feel like I see who they are and how they live?
If the answer is yes, you're on the right track. If the answer is "eh, maybe it'll fill a box," put it back.
This is what people really want: gifts that respect their space, time, and taste.
When Someone Really Gets It: A Real Nifty Story
A few months ago, a client reached out with an unusual request. He wanted to send nail polishes to someone special — but not just boxed and shipped.
He shared two reference images with us: dramatic dark gothic floral arrangements with deep crimson peonies, black roses, dark berry tones, and black velvet ribbon. He told us the recipient loves "goth type things" and asked if we could translate that aesthetic into the wrapping itself.
Most gifts stop at the product. This one was going to start there.

Here's what Nifty created: Each nail polish was individually wrapped in black tissue paper and tied with delicate black velvet ribbon bows. They were nestled into black crinkle fill inside a natural wood box. The outer box was wrapped in rich, dark oxblood red paper and finished with a luxurious black velvet bow.

"I have never seen such beautiful gift wrapping!"
That's the moment right there. He didn't just buy nail polish. He bought a feeling. He saw someone he cared about, understood their aesthetic, and asked a gift-wrapping studio to translate a mood into paper and ribbon.
And we did.
That's what it looks like when a gift says "I see you." Not just the product — the whole thing. The wrapping. The color. The texture. The care in every fold.
That's what people really want.
Make It Personal
Need help making a gift feel like it was made for one person? That's what we do.
Whether you're shipping across the country or wrapping something in your hands, whether it's for a client or a best friend, whether you have a vision or just a feeling — we'll build the gift from there.
Because the best gift isn't what's inside the box. It's knowing someone saw you, understood you, and cared enough to make it show.
